 NOMADUK CHEST  WADER JACKETS

"Boinky the guide (somewhere on a Dutch polder)"

At NOMADUK we  manufacture 3  quite different Chest Wader Jackets:

the Nomad      the Explorer          the Kenmore

  • the  ' NEW NOMAD' is a professional guide model at expeditionary level, tailored for roomy wear in 7 sizes and  to be worn over full fly vest, bulky clothing and 5mm waders, with more features than any other chest wader jacket.
  • the 'EXPLORER' is the lightest breathable pack-away chest wader jacket available and because of that has never been copied. Weighing grammes the 'EXPLORER'  is a very serious garment and was designed with deep wading fly fishermen in mind whether they be Atlantic Salmon, trout, float tubers or even saltwater Striped Bass and Sea-Trout enthusiasts.
  • 'KENMORE' - named after the village from whence the mighty Tay empties the massive self named loch and where each year the "Opening" is celebrated with celebration and ceremony :- Whisky, Pipe Band and Angler's Parade .... is a unique jacket made for Deep Wading anglers with all the necessities and a hood that tucks away into its collar.

But, to understand why there should be so many and to gain some insight into each model it is worth recounting :

The Story behind NOMADUK's Chest Wading Jackets

Picture a long winding pool in a flat Tundra landscape,  framed by stunted Alaska pines. A  squally wet day,  sky heavy in leadened grey, an Alagnak river surface dimpled with incessant rain and beneath this very same surface a river teaming thick with fresh run Silver Salmon.... the stuff of dreams ?? ...... Maybe, but the real life truth is sadly different, as, excitement, down from a level of high anticipation three days previous, lies as vanquished and as damp as the sodden peat tundra around. Instead of fishing, dripping wet guides and guests shiver  beneath a shelter provided by a lonely river-cut overhang and await the passing of the deluge. How sad,.... and all for a change of clothes, or, better still.....waterproofs that work.

And so, born from a drenching and a determination not to miss another day's fishing, evolved : 'The NOMAD', and from the one thing that the 'NOMAD' could not do  (ie. pack away into a pocket sized package) came its sibling : 'The EXPLORER', which was awarded a 'Best New Product' at International Fly Tackle Dealer Show in Denver, USA in 1993.

The original concept behind the 'NOMAD' Chest Wader Jacket was to manufacture a well fitting, functional garment (to the demanding standards of the professional American Guide - not dissimilar to those of the fanatical, itinerant, all night Sea Trout angler) in a fabric that works ie robust,  highly breathable and totally wind- and waterproof.

Two exacting seasons later the results could be read for themselves as the 'NOMAD'  -- complete with more functional features than any other wading jacket before or since -- outfitted more Alaskan Fly-out Lodges than even any American manufactured chest wader jacket:

"I wore the 'NOMAD' for Great Lakes Steelheading last April, when squalls of wet, sticking snow howled up the river valley. It has protected me during a torrential downpour that lasted several hours during a bonefish expedition to Florida's Biscayne Bay, and it kept me warm on dank, sunless days on the Miramichi in early June. Just try and take it away from me now!" George Gruenefield, Contributing Editor, Atlantic Salmon Journal. ......

  and,

"After 27 years fishing the Western Seaboard I had long discounted any one make of chest wader jacket, irrespective of material used ..... they just don't last.

'NOMAD' has convinced my guides and I otherwise. Coming from all over the 'States', they are true professionals guiding three to four different locations each year. At Katmai Lodge they wear as many as three different rain jackets a week each. By the end of the season 'NOMAD' was the Katmai uniform.

Ever the doubter, I was so impressed by this that I tested the 'NOMAD' chest wader jacket during the fall of 1989, and then used it daily for four solid months during 1990 !  On returning from Alaska that fall I went on my annual three week fishing trip to British Columbia for Steelhead. I regularly fish areas where there are 200 plus inches of rainfall a year. Rain gear is very essential and I always take spare. Infact in B.C. I normally take a minimum of three rain jackets with me ! In 1990 I took only my 'NOMAD', as I know it would be more than adequate.

It rained daily on that trip, temperatures went well below freezing, yet I was very comfortable, warm and dry. Not only does the material withstand the ravages of horizontal rain at 30 miles an hour in an open jet boat but so does the design ! And what features: a hood that actually turns with your head and with so many features and pockets that I can travel light and efficiently with all I need for a day's fly-fishing. With 'NOMAD' I can and do go anywhere."  Tony Sarp, Owner & Manager of KATMAI LODGE.

Not only did the 'NOMAD' become a firm favourite in the land of the midnight sun, but also amongst Baltic and North Seas' saltwater seatrout anglers in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Germany.

But why offer four wading jackets when one is so good ? The answer has to do with function and giving our customers best of service and choice. The essential qualities which highlight the differences between each model are as follows:

1). THE ' NEW NOMAD' CHEST WADER JACKET  -

Made from Olive Green peached microfibre  with hydrophilic coating  ( a fabric boasting No Leaks in 16 years !!)  the ' NEW NOMAD' is robust yet light and tailored for roominess to be worn over a full fly vest, bulky clothing and 5mm Neoprene waders- as such  it is bigger in the chest than other wading jackets which results in the joy of unrestricted casting.

  • tightly woven polycotton coated outer shell, the inner lining has nylon sleeves,  specially chosen wool/acrylic Lindsay tartan lining which is warm, strongly woven and very breathable, with, below a 10" waterproof wading strip.  ***
  • The large hood adjusts to any size of head, permits full view at any angle. When not in use it can be rolled and secured by toggles to form a collar. A stiffened brim protects when raining.
  • Tailored for ease of movement: full cut body, 'Raglan' style wide sleeves and broad cuffs  mean no restrictions
  • Double cuff system is unique - internal is adjustable to prevent water entering and the outer will close over gloves.
  •  2 x large cargo pockets for largest of fly boxes;
  • 2 x deep hand warmer pockets
  • Fold down 'fly leaf' holds even weighted and barbless flies -and, when used with rod holder permits easy hands-free change of flies in mid current.
  • Rod holder uniquely will even take a double handed Salmon Fly Rod
  • Loop for a night light
  • Thermometer holder
  • 4 'D' rings for haemostats, wading stick and net
  • Studded double storm flap
  • In flap - most jackets have a wallet sized pocket - the 'NOMAD' doesn't - instead has a huge  zippered 'wrap-around' pocket for camera, binoculars, coffee  flask, spare reels etc. In our opinion this pocket is far superior to the flapped envelope style found on the back of some coats - firstly the 'NOMAD's is easily accessible and secondly it does not cause restriction to casting etc or discomfort the way a lump in the middle of one's back can which is the result of filling the afore-mentioned envelope  with only half the product the 'wrap-around' pocket holds..
  • Internally there are 2 zippered pockets in the 10" wet strip for leaders, spare spools etc;  1 x zippered security pocket for keys & documents

2).  'EXPLORER' CHEST WADER JACKET

During the 17 months we at NOMADUK designed, modified and stringently tested the original 'NOMAD' we realised that no one single design of jacket or weight of material used could cater for all  different forms of fly fishing so we added the quite amazing 'EXPLORER' - the lightest, most breathable chest wader jacket ever made - to our range !!

Despite being the lightest most breathable chest wader jacket ever made, it is robust enough to withstand the conditions of  cold salt-water fly fishing ( Danish Sea-Trout and New England Striped Bass) but also tropical ---- ever caught a bonefish in the rain ??

" Two years ago I came across the NOMAD 'EXPLORER' jacket, the lightweight wading jacket that could pack away into its own pocket. I'm happy to report that the same jacket is still repelling rain like a trawler man's sou'wester, and that it has retained its looks too: an exceptional material: breathable, salt-waterporoof and weighing a fraction of comparable fabrics." Marc Bowler, Editor of 'Fly Fishing & Fly Tying Review June 1996.

  • Weighing ounces, the unique 'packaway' EXPLORER cuts wind and water alike complementing the original 'NOMAD' as a warmer weather, expeditionary garment which fits easily into fly vest pocket.
  • The slick Meryll material permits unrestricted movement when worn under a vest as the fabric slips back and forth in casting; whilst extra material in the front of the chest allows it also to be worn comfortably over a vest - this little bit of innovative thinking and attention to tailoring is typical of NOMADUK's practical approach
  • Large hood rolls up to form a collar
  • Stiffened brim protects glasses when raining
  • Tailored as ever for ease of movement with 'raglan' style shoulders and sleeves, which are long and accommodating and single, adjustable waterproof cuffs
  • Cut short in the body for deeper wading
  • Sensibly outer 2 zippered fly box pockets are actually inside outer shell thus not getting in the way of double handed salmon fly rod in casting or causing friction when worn underneath a fly vest.
  • Jacket actually folds away into one of these pockets with a loop so can be attached to fly vest or belt
  • 'D' ring for snippers, haemostats etc
  • Internally a wet strip at waist and cuffs with mesh lining and 2 equipment pockets

3).'STILLWATER' CHEST WADER JACKET
